Since induction cooktops use electromagnetism to transfer heat, only certain types of cookware – namely, that with a magnetic base – will work. “Begin by going through your existing pots and pans to double-check that they’re compatible with induction equipment,” advises Dean Harper. “They must contain iron to work – cast iron and magnetic stainless steel can work well, but aluminum or copper-based cookware will not work unless they have a magnetic base.”
Additionally, consider the sizes of the cookware if you’re buying new pots and pans for an induction cooktop. The sizing doesn’t have to be exact, but due to how induction works, a pot or pan that’s too large or too small for a burner won’t activate the heating element.
4. What regular maintenance or cleaning is required for an induction cooktop?
Another advantage induction cooktops have over electric and gas stovetops is that they are easier to clean. Induction cooktops typically feature slick glass surfaces that can be easily wiped clean. For more stubborn messes, you can use a glass-safe cleaning solution, gentle scraping tool, or soft brush.
Also, take care to keep any vents and air outlets clear of dust, grease, or other accumulations. Aside from cleaning, induction cooktops generally require very little, if any, maintenance on the part of the user. However, a professional electrician should always perform any required repairs or maintenance.
5. How long do induction cooktops last?
